Ease Anxiety and Experience Calm

Ear acupuncture is a holistic treatment based on the principles of Chinese Medicine. It has been found to be beneficial for a range of health conditions. The treatment involves the placement of high-quality, fine micro-needles on specific acu-points on the ear.

There are 200 acupuncture points on each ear, with each point relating to a specific part of the body such as the liver, kidneys, and lungs.

About 5-6 needles are gently placed on each ear at acupuncture points relevant for your unique situation.

Ear acupuncture is a microsystem acupuncture therapy that is based on Chinese Medicine. Dis-ease is considered to be the outcome of imbalances within the body systems and treatment focuses on restoring balance. Then the body’s internal self-healing and health-generating mechanisms can function optimally.

From a Western perspective, the stimulated ear acupuncture points create impulses within the brain which then flow through the nervous system to the particular parts of the body that need to be treated.

Benefits of Ear Acupuncture

People have found ear acupuncture to be beneficial for a range of health-related conditions. Research has found that ear acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s feel-good chemicals. Some of the most common conditions people say they have experienced benefit from ear acupuncture include:

  • Release stress, anxiety, and tension – I’ve found ear acupuncture is an extremely effective treatment for people experiencing stress and tension. The majority of my clients report immediate benefits by the end of the session usually lasting for at least a couple of days
  • Insomnia – Clients have also reported excellent improvements in their sleep after ear acupuncture. Improvements usually accumulate after a few sessions and in many cases have been resolved completely
  • Enhance mood, lift depression – by releasing endorphins ear acupuncture can be a helpful treatment for low mood and mild depression and it complements any medical treatment you may be receiving for this condition
  • Headaches, migraines, fibromyalgia – there are specific acupuncture points that can provide support for physical pain, in particular headaches and migraines
  • Digestive disorders – clients have reported a lessening of digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhoea, and indigestion as well as improvements in IBS symptoms
  • Fatigue, lack of energy – if you are feeling rundown and notice you get tired easily then the relaxing nature of a ear acupuncture treatment may help to recharge you
  • Weight management, smoking cessation – if you have been struggling with losing weight or quitting smoking, ear acupuncture may help. A 2006 study by Plymouth University concluded that ear acupuncture appears be effective for smoking cessation (1)
  • Addiction support – ear acupuncture is widely used in the UK to assist people dealing with addictions. The NADA protocol is frequently used in substance misuse clinics nationwide
  • Gain clarity and motivation – if you have been feeling stuck and lacking direction, ear acupuncture can sometimes assist in clearing the fog and motivating you to take action according to feedback from clients

What happens during a session

We start by discussing your health history and finding out what you would like to gain from the treatment. Whilst you relax on a therapy couch the sterile needles are inserted at ‘active’ points on each of your ears.

The needles are super-fine, measuring just 1mm which is the equivalent of the width of a human hair. They are placed superficially on the ear (1-3mm). Occasionally a certain point may be slightly tender but in general people find ear acupuncture to be a pleasant and pain-free treatment.

We leave the needles to do their work for at least 20 minutes. During this time we may either practice some meditation (I guide you through a meditation exercise) or you simply relax and enjoy the moments of simply doing nothing. The choice is yours. At the end of the treatment the needles are removed and disposed of them hygienically.
